Emerging from the ruins of Melbourne bands, Grind (1995), and Render (1998), 2000 saw Tofa going solo with recording projects and touring. Taking his passionate live show, described as “haunting, raw-edged emotion”, overseas, Tofa received a warm welcome in Canada. This welcome was to be further extended later when radio station CIUT-FM Toronto voted the Tofa album ‘75’ to No. 29 on its album charts! Not bad for an independent artist... Further recording expeditions followed with ‘01’, an EP showcasing the more intimate songwriting that has become the trademark of a Tofa live show. Hometown audiences in Melbourne have shown great support by filling venues such as The Empress of India Hotel and Revolver. Tofa was also recruited to provide music for two short films by Melbourne indie moviemaker Andrew Lee, and rose to the challenge with a feast of beats and samples, further fuelling speculation that he is only a singer because he is such a crap DJ! The new single ‘So Beautiful’ has already drawn glowing reviews from Melbourne street press, being described as “Lush acoustic pop” that “makes you wanna go back and listen a few more times”, and the video clip was recently screened on the ABC television program Rage. July 2003 sees Tofa touring with the new single, and looking forward to being a part of Club Acoustica! |
