Yes, There is an Alternative to Triple J
By Sacha Molitorisz
Showcasing Australian Electronic Music... Rick Bull, aka Deepchild

24-07-2002 The Sydney Morning Herald

Imagine this. You're in Sydney, surfing the FM band, and suddenly you hear local hip-hop artist MC Trey freestyling - improvising - with US rapper Gift of Gab. It's rough, it's fresh, it's thrilling. So, upon which station have you stumbled? Nova? Triple M? Triple J?

Hardly. Instead, you're listening to 2SER, or Sydney Educational Radio, the quiet achiever on Sydney's noisy FM dial. At 107.3, thanks to a legion of volunteer DJs, journos and behind-the-scenes crew, 2SER has been broadcasting distinctly alternative views and tunes since 1979.

"We're looking at things from different angles," says Andrew Khedoori, 2SER's music director and host of Methodology, on Tuesdays at 9pm. "Our station manager likes to say we're providing a true alternative and addressing issues of social justice - without wanting to sound too bolshie about it.

“As far as music goes ... a lot of people complain about the lack of choice in Sydney radio. While people might not be able to listen to 2SER all day, there should be several points along the programming schedule that people will enjoy.”

This week, for the first time in three years, 2SER has overhauled its schedule. On weeknights, 6.30 to 8 is now dedicated to new releases from a wide range of styles: on Mondays it's “general eclectic”; on Tuesdays it's “all Oz indie”; on Wednesdays it's an all-Australian selection of original songs pulled together by Beej Hunter and Martin Contempree of Club Acoustica; and on Thursdays it's Static, featuring new pop, rock, beats and almost everything else.

The new schedule also includes: Outpost, Jason Walker's alt-country/roots show (Mondays, 10.30am); Bambu Hut, a sampler of non-Western rhythms and culture hosted by veteran buff Brent Clough (Mondays, 9pm); and the best new and old beats from the Groove Therapy collective (Fridays, noon).

Tune in today between 2 and 4pm and you can hear Rick Bull, aka electronic artist Deepchild, co-hosting Electroplastique. “It's an all-Australian electronic music show, which started under the auspices of Clan Analogue, a loose collective of DJs, VJs, sound artists and producers,” says Bull.

“There's a really strong connection between 2SER and groups like Clan Analogue - 2SER is an essential hub of the music scene.”

Broadcasting from the UTS Tower at Broadway, 2SER is far more than a niche network for a select few: Khedoori says the weekly core audience now exceeds 100,000. What's more, many presenters who started at 2SER are now working on Triple J and elsewhere, while many artists whose records first aired at 107.3FM are now commercial radio staples.

“Over the years on Electroplastique we've interviewed kids who've done quite well ... “ says Bull.

“But the end goal is not to use 2SER just as a launchpad, but to feed back into it and support it.”

To that end, Bull will put on his Deepchild hat to perform at a concert at the Metro Theatre's Roma Room on Saturday night, one of two fundraisers comprising “the 2SER Turnover”.

Tomorrow night, the first show is a hip-hop bonanza featuring Koolism, Explanetary and Maya Jupiter. The line-up for Saturday's second show includes The Bird, Herd and the Telemetry Orchestra.

Also on tomorrow's bill is MC Trey, a Sydney-based hip hopper.

“2SER were one of the first stations that started playing my music,” says Trey.

Over the years, what has been the highlight of MC Trey's involvement with 2SER?

“The opportunity to freestyle with other rappers, both local and international,” he says.

“The most memorable was Gift of Gab from Blackalicious. He's my freestyle hero. People were saying, 'I don't know how you had the guts', but I said, 'How could I not?'”

The 2SER Turnover is at the Metro Theatre's Roma Room tomorrow and Saturday nights. Tickets $15 ($12 for 2SER supporters) per show, plus booking fee. See www.2ser.com for more concert and programming details.
